All patient cases are presented to specialty tumor and cancer boards for optimal decision making. Our nurses are a part of it all. Moffitt Clinics offer the following Cancer Programs: Comprehensive Breast program, Neuro, Sarcoma, Senior Adult, GU, GI, Women's Diagnostic Clinic, Malignant Hematology, Blood & Marrow Transplantation, Direct Referral Center, Thoracic, Pyschosocial, Palliative Care, Interventional Pain, Cutaneous/Dermatology, Head & Neck, Radiation Therapy, Special Procedures, Alternative Medicine, and the Infusion Center. Our inter-disciplinary approach to patient care includes the services of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, registered dietitians and research staff.
Radiology Nursing
Radiology Nurses must possess specialized clinical skills, sound judgment, and good interpersonal techniques to provide optimal care for oncology patients with a wide range of diagnostic and interventional needs. Radiology nursing is a new and exciting specialty. In addition to strong nursing skills, radiology nurses must have a working knowledge of anatomy, computed tomography, ultrasound, MRI, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. We provide a positive, unhurried, nurturing atmosphere, along with thorough education, to allay the patients fears of the unknown procedure. We recognize that patients who are well informed and cared for in a positive environment need less sedation and have fewer post procedure complications. Our radiology nurses, work hand-in-hand with the technologist and the radiologist, and have an ever changing and growing role in the rapidly advancing field of radiology. All of our RNs are ACLS certified and have Critical Care experience. On site training and education assures consistent and quality provision of care.
Radiation Therapy Nursing
The Radiation Therapy Department provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, consultation, treatment and education to our diverse patient population having a variety of cancer diagnoses. Services include Brain-Stereotatic Radiosurgery, Head & Neck, Thoracic, Breast (Mammosite), GI, GYN- (Brachytherapy), GU, Prostate (Seed Implants), Sarcoma, Cutaneous (Melanoma) and Research. The department works closely with the patient's inter-disciplinary team to provide the best possible comprehensive cancer treatment.
Our Radiation Therapy Nurses are direct patient care providers. They educate and practice in a supportive environment utilizing their expert clinical, critical thinking and communication skills to assess and educate patients and families. They function autonomously and in collaboration with the physician to provide individualized patient care. Their responsibilities include nursing assessment, patient and family education of procedures and side effects. Radiation Therapy Nurses also collaborate in the details of treatment planning, providing patient symptom management, as needed, throughout the patient's treatment. Our nurses are experienced Radiation Therapy Nurses who receive additional training and education on site to provide consistent professional nursing care to our patients.
Cancer Prevention and Early Detection: Lifetime Cancer Screening
The RN at Moffitt's Lifetime Cancer Screening and Prevention Center (LCS) is an integral member of a unique cancer prevention team that includes medical and surgical oncologists, nurse practitioners, radiologists, geneticists, genetic counselors, and researchers. Our LCS RNs are committed to providing primary cancer prevention (preventing the development of cancer) through risk assessment and health promotion, and secondary cancer prevention (early detection) by providing clinical breast examinations and instruction on self-examination to a diverse group of patients.
The RN also provides clinical support in our clinics designed to provide surveillance to patients at high-risk for breast and ovarian cancer and in clinics providing diagnostic evaluation to patients with skin, breast and cervical cancer screening abnormalities. A new LCS research initiative, aimed at identifying gene-environment interactions leading to the development of cancer, will help us more clearly define high-risk populations, discover novel nutraceutical and chemoprevention agents, and develop more sensitive biomarkers for early detection, creating an extraordinary opportunity to practice nursing in an innovative center dedicated to the prevention of cancer. We provide education to prepare experienced Registered Nurses to work with our patients and with the public to provide knowledgeable, skilled services.
