Dr. Shibata's laboratory research centers on the study of specific molecular mechanisms such as DNA methylation that contribute to the development of colorectal and other gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Shibata is an expert in the surgical and multidisciplinary management of primary and metastatic tumors of the colon and rectum; Primary Colon Cancer: Laparoscopic/Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery; Primary Rectal Cancer: Transanal Surgery, Total Mesorectal Excision, Colonic J-pouch Reconstruction and Sphincter-Preserving Surgery for Rectal Cancer; Recurrent/Locally Advanced Colorectal Cancer; Metastatic Colorectal Cancer:
Liver Resection, Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA); Hereditary and High-Risk Colorectal Cancer: Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease-associated colorectal cancer (Ileal Pouch procedures).
