Lodovico Balducci, MD

Research Interests:

The scientific scope of the Senior Adult Oncology Program, under the direction of Dr. Balducci, has been patient assessment and prediction of treatment-related toxicity. This has been the focus of this group's research for several years, and this work has resulted in numerous scientific presentations and publications. The most important scientific findings of the group's research have included the following:

  • Independence of comorbidity and functional status
  • Ability of comprehensive geriatric assessment to unearth unsuspected conditions that interfere with antineoplastic treatment
  • Prediction of benefits and risk of adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer in women aged 70 years and older based on functional status and comorbidity
  • Formulation of the MAX-2 index for prediction of chemotherapy-related toxicityAssessment of quality of life in older cancer patients
  • Treatment-related preferences in older patients based on risk-taking profile
  • Treatment-related preferences in older patients based on national origin

This main research focus has been interwoven with other research areas, in particular decision analysis, health care delivery, and clinical pharmacology. Ongoing studies include cost-effectiveness of cancer prevention and cancer treatment, enrollment of older individuals in phase II trials, pharmacokinetics of docetaxel in patients aged 70 years and older, and cognitive effects of chemotherapy in older patients.

Dr. Balducci is protocol chairman of the Geriatric Oncology Consortium, which conducts nationwide clinical trials in older individuals, and is chairman of the committee on guidelines for the management of older individuals of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. He also is involved in cooperative research related to anemia of aging through the National Anemia Action Council.
