The liver is the largest organ inside the abdomen. The liver produces bile, a type of digestive enzyme that helps break down fats, and it removes toxic substances from the blood that are eliminated from the body as waste matter. Although primary liver cancer does occur, most often liver cancer is a metastatic cancer, which means it developed as a cancer in another part of the body, such as the colon, breast or lung, and then spread to the liver.
