Dr. Schabath is a lung cancer epidemiologist interested in translational epidemiology research to identify genetic markers that influence treatment-response and lung cancer survival. The overarching goal of this research is to use somatic and germline genetic information to predict which treatment options will be the most efficacious and increase lung cancer survival. Since joining Moffitt Cancer Center in 2008, Dr. Schabath has expanded his research interests to include assessing the natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) in men and assessing the role of HPV in lung cancer. Presently he has several on-going studies including: (1) defining the molecular heterogeneity of KRAS mutant lung cancer using microarray gene signatures; (2) assessing the role of germline genetic variations on treatment response in lung cancer patients; (3) assessing the prevalence, integration, and molecular profile of HPV in lung cancer; (4) assessing the influence of smoking and diet on the natural history of HPV in men; and (5) establishing a large, prospectively recruited cohort of lung cancer patients to assess the impact of risk factors and clinical covariates on lung cancer outcomes.
