Skull base surgery can be an important part of treatment for patients who are diagnosed with cancers of the head and neck. In some cases, these operations can be performed endoscopically (using minimally invasive techniques). In cases where the tumors are large or difficult to access, however, surgeons may take a more conventional, open approach to better reach the surgical site.

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we have significant experience in performing both traditional and endoscopic skull base surgery. Our oncologists assess each patient’s unique condition to determine the best approach to treatment, and complex cases are brought before our tumor board for collaborative review. Not only do our surgeons perform many types of brain cancer surgeries, but they also have treated patients with a wide range of diagnoses. We have performed skull base surgery for patients with rare conditions, such as:

  • Tumors of the pituitary gland
  • Chordomas, or bone tumors that develop at the base of the skull
  • Meningiomas, which develop in the tissue that covers the brain
  • Malignant head and neck cancers that invade into the skull base

After surgery, each patient is monitored by a multispecialty team to help ensure a smooth recovery. At Moffitt, we not only focus on our patients’ outcomes, but also on their quality of life. Our collaborative group of nurses, supportive care providers, physical and occupational therapists and other skilled medical professionals are here to help patients throughout the rehabilitative process. With surgical intensive care units ready to welcome patients who are coming out of complex brain and skull base operations, we’re committed to making sure each of their unique needs is fully met.
