Robotic Surgery for Small Intestine Cancer

Small intestine surgery is sometimes performed with robotic assistance. At Moffitt Cancer Center, our surgeons use the da Vinci® Surgical System to achieve a high level of precision, and also to help our patients attain the best possible outcomes and quality of life.

During robotic surgery, a surgeon performs the operation as he or she normally would, but uses a console that translates his or her real-time movements into smaller, more exact motions that are carried out by the robotic system. The surgeon is in control of the entire process.

Depending on a patient’s specific diagnosis and medical history, Moffitt’s surgeons may perform any of the following procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System:

• Small bowel resection
• Duodenal resection
• Ampullectomy

Robotic surgery offers a number of potential benefits over traditional surgery. For instance, many patients whose procedures are performed with the da Vinci Surgical System experience less blood loss and less scarring after surgery. The recovery times tend to be shorter for robotic procedures as well.
