An ampullectomy is a surgical procedure commonly used to treat patients with pancreatic cancer at Moffitt Cancer Center. To determine if a patient will benefit from a traditional or robotic ampullectomy, the surgical oncologists of our Gastrointestinal Oncology Program use their expertise to develop a course of treatment that is tailored to meet the unique challenges of each patients’ cancer. Some factors that will determine the best course of treatment for each pancreatic cancer patient include the size and stage of the tumor as well as the patient’s overall health.

If the experts in our pancreatic cancer program determine an ampullectomy is necessary, some patients may benefit from shorter recovery times as well as less scarring, surgical blood loss and postoperative pain by undergoing this procedure robotically using the da Vinci® Surgical System. As a trailblazer in advancing the way physicians approach cancer treatment, Moffitt has surgeons with extensive experience with this advanced equipment. The da Vinci Surgical System allows surgeons improved visibility, control and precision thanks to:

  • Wristed instruments that translate the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller movements while also offering improved range of motion
  • A 3D high-definition vision system

For some patients, a traditional or robotic-assisted ampullectomy may be combined with other forms of treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Furthermore, as a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center – the only one based in Florida – Moffitt is committed to advancing cancer research and treatment. Eligible patients may have the opportunity to participate in our robust clinical trials program, where they can receive the latest breakthroughs in treatment before they are made available elsewhere. Moffitt patients also have access to dietitians, social workers, counselors and other supportive care professionals in the same location as their pancreatic cancer treatment to ensure their physical and emotional needs are being met throughout the duration of their time at Moffitt.
