Radiation therapy for stomach cancer involves the use of high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells. Prior to undergoing a surgical procedure, a patient may receive radiation treatment in order to shrink the tumors to facilitate their removal. After surgery, radiation can be used to target residual cells that could not be surgically removed. A stomach cancer patient who has completed an initial course of treatment may also be advised to undergo radiation therapy, either on its own or in combination with chemotherapy, as a way to help prevent recurrence. In cases of advanced stomach cancer, radiation therapy can sometimes ease symptoms like pain, bleeding and eating difficulties by slowing the growth of the cancer.

Some radiation therapy delivery methods for stomach cancer include:

  • External beam radiation therapy – High-energy rays are directed from a machine located outside a patient’s body to the cancerous cells within the body
  • Internal radiation therapy – Radioactive material contained in a catheter, implanted seed or other carrier is placed directly into or near a tumor site
  • Systemic radiation therapy – A radioactive substance is swallowed or injected and then travels through the bloodstream to target and destroy cancerous cells
