Overview

The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Moffitt Cancer Center was established in 2012 and awarded accreditation status by ASHP in 2013. Moffitt offers a 12-month program designed to further develop academic, clinical, professional, leadership and research skills. Specifically, the resident will be actively involved in managing the therapeutic decisions and clinical outcomes of patients in a multi-disciplinary environment. The PGY1 resident will work closely with dedicated preceptors and participate in all aspects of pharmacy practice pertaining to clinical practice, drug information, research and education.

While providing care to our complex patient base, our residency provides didactic and experiential training in the areas of internal medicine, critical care, infectious diseases, hematology/oncology and pain management. In addition, the resident will become ACLS certified and participate on the code blue team. Opportunities for layered learning with pharmacy students are available both in precepting as well as didactic sessions with the University of South Florida College of Pharmacy on campus.

Upon completion of the program, the PGY1 resident will have the confidence and skills to practice in a variety of pharmacy services and excel in the realms of clinical practice, education and research. Our residents are prepared for PGY2 specialty residencies, fellowships, or clinical pharmacy positions nationwide.

Philosophy

It is essential for college of pharmacy graduates to obtain the knowledge base and clinical skills required to become competent in the pharmaceutical care of patients. Pharmacy residencies serve as one of the best modalities to achieve this by providing the opportunity to apply and integrate pharmaceutical principles in the care of patients with the guidance of a preceptor. The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency is designed to instill a philosophy of practice that embraces the concept of pharmacists being responsible and accountable for pursuing optimal drug therapy outcomes in the care of all patients.
