OVERVIEW

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has recently approved Moffitt Cancer Center to have an independent Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program to start the academic year 2025-2026. For many years, under the accreditation of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) and ACGME, Moffitt Cancer Center was a co-sponsor site under The University of South Florida along with the USF Faculty at Tampa General Hospital (TGH). Going forward, and with GME accreditation still within USF, Moffitt will run its independent fellowship program allowing it to align its education to its unique and exceptionally high volume of complex cancer cases and large number of expert faculty.

Moffitt Cancer Center is an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center with a three-year Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program. Our mission is to train the next generation of academically focused gynecologic oncologists. Because we are one of the top tertiary and academic cancer centers in the country, our program is unmatched in the number of exenterative and other complex surgeries; basic, translational and clinical research; and the comprehensive therapeutic and molecular management of gynecologic malignancies.

TRAINING AND CURRICULUM

Curriculum

Moffitt Cancer Center offers a three-year Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program. Our program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. We are approved for three fellowship positions, accepting one fellow per year.

Research and Clinical Rotations

Fellows will spend their first 12 months protected for research in gynecologic malignancies in a laboratory based on the fellow’s research interest. We have a broad range of opportunities including basic science, translational, epidemiologic and mathematical modeling.

After the research year, fellows will continue their 24 months of clinical training at Moffitt Cancer Center locations. This clinical experience allows the opportunity to work and operate with a full complement of gynecologic oncology attendings in the clinic and the operating rooms. Our faculty performs complex surgery utilizing laparoscopy, robotic surgery and radical surgeries. We have a high volume of primary gynecologic cancer surgery, secondary surgery and exenterative cases which include performing our bowel and urinary tract surgery. Surgical operations are located at a newly opened eight-story surgical hospital, Moffitt McKinley Hospital. In addition, we have clinical operations at Moffitt McKinley Outpatient Center and Moffitt International Plaza.

Our fellows will work in a multidisciplinary fashion alongside our gynecologic oncology, medical oncology and radiation oncology faculty to receive comprehensive training in the use and management of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy and clinical trials. In addition to the gynecologic oncology service, there are rotations available on surgical oncology, radiation therapy and critical care services.

Didactics

The clinical and research training is reinforced with a dedicated weekly didactic curriculum that includes faculty-led lectures from gynecologic oncology, surgical oncology, pathology, radiology, radiation oncology, palliative and supportive care, critical care medicine, interventional medicine, internal medicine, genetics, research and development, biostatistics, epidemiology and pharmacology. Fellows lead our weekly surgical and multidisciplinary tumor board conferences, genetics tumor board conferences and monthly journal clubs. In addition, there are monthly research and clinical trial conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences and a wellness series.
