TAMPA, Fla.— Moffitt Cancer Center has received the 2024 Employer Recognition Award from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC). The award recognizes an organization’s sustained support for oncology certification of nursing staff.

This is the cancer center’s second time being recognized.

The ONCC presents awards in two categories: one for smaller organizations employing fewer than 25 registered nurses and another for larger organizations employing 25 or more registered nurses.

The ONCC provides the premier, nationally accredited certifications for registered nurses in oncology and related specialties. Certification promotes health and safety by validating competence and ensuring lifelong learning in these fields. More than 40,000 nurses are certified by ONCC in adult oncology, pediatric hematology oncology, breast care, and blood and marrow transplant nursing.

“This award truly mirrors Moffitt’s dedication to advancing cancer prevention and cure. Our nurses serve as crucial leaders, ensuring access to and delivering top-notch cancer care,” said Kelley Gonzalvo, DNP, chief nursing officer at Moffitt. “By stepping into specialized roles at Moffitt, they prioritize optimal patient outcomes. Through ongoing training and education, including partnerships with organizations like the ONCC, they continuously enhance their skills and expertise.”

The award was presented during the ONCC Recognition Breakfast for Oncology Certified Nurses in Washington, D.C., during the Oncology Nursing Society Congress.

Moffitt’s nursing staff engages in all facets of patient care and research, spanning from preventive measures and screenings to therapeutic interventions and participation in clinical trials. The nursing team comprises registered nurses, nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, with a significant number holding certifications in specialized fields like oncology, critical care and radiology.

Moffitt has received additional accolades such as being named Top 10 in the nation by Newsweek, being recognized on Forbes’ America’s Best Large Employers List and Forbes’ Best Employers for Women, and is also a Tampa Bay Times Top Workplace.
