The latest advances in surgery for breast cancer are available at Moffitt Cancer Center. As a high-volume cancer center, our surgeons have gained the highest level of expertise from regularly performing complex breast cancer procedures. The skill of our surgeons translates directly into a better treatment experience for our patients, and in combination with our progressive surgical technologies, allows us to remove tumors that were once thought to be inoperable.

While breast cancer surgery is often supplemented with other treatments like radiation therapy, chemotherapy or hormone therapy, it is often the first step in treating cancer. There are several types of surgery that may be recommended based on the nature and extent of the malignancy. These include:

  • Mastectomy – This procedure involves the surgical removal of all of the breast tissue, both healthy and cancerous, in one or both breasts. In many cases, the nipple, areola and surrounding lymph nodes are also removed. Some healthy patients who are at a high risk of developing breast cancer choose to undergo this procedure as a preventive measure.
  • Lumpectomy – Also known as breast-conserving surgery, a lumpectomy involves the removal of cancerous tumors and a small portion of the surrounding healthy tissue to ensure all malignant cells have been eliminated.
  • Sentinel node mapping – This surgery is used to help confirm the extent of the cancer and, consequently, the most appropriate form of treatment.
  • Axillary node dissection – This surgery is performed to remove lymph nodes in the armpit region, which are often affected by breast cancer.

Some Moffitt patients may be candidates for minimally invasive breast cancer surgery that disturbs only a minimal amount of healthy tissue. Various types of breast reconstruction surgery are also performed at our center for patients who have completed treatment.
