Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Program
Moffitt Cancer Center’s Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Oncology Program offers a comprehensive range of educational, preventive, diagnostic, treatment and supportive care services designed specifically for cancer patients aged 15 to 39, and younger teens in select cases. We understand that teens and young adults often have different needs and concerns than their younger and older counterparts, and we are committed to helping our young patients manage the unique challenges that cancer can bring during this pivotal time of life.
Moffitt’s AYA services
With a goal to enhance the experience of our adolescent and young adult patients, Moffitt’s AYA Oncology Program was designed to complement our world-class cancer treatment. In addition to the latest therapies, including cutting-edge clinical trials, our young patients can benefit from:
- Counseling, for help in dealing with emotional, behavioral, self-esteem, body image and other issues
- Educational and vocational assessments
- Peer support
- Genetic testing
- Fertility preservation strategies
Moffitt’s AYA Lounge
Moffitt also understands that adolescent and young adult cancer patients may feel isolated at times, mainly because they are too old for pediatric cancer centers but still younger than most of the patients in adult cancer centers. While these young patients are far from alone, they may not have many opportunities to cross paths with others who are facing similar situations. With this in mind, Moffitt established a dedicated Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Lounge, which provides our young patients with a convenient place to relax with their peers, families and friends in a nontraditional hospital setting.
Cancer Survivorship Clinic
As survivors travel through the different phases of their cancer journey, the Cancer Survivorship Clinic can help young adult patients to address different challenges that emerge after completing therapy. We are committed to recognizing survivorship as a distinct phase or the cancer care continuum. We offer a one-time Onco-wellness visit for patients who are transitioning from cancer therapy into surveillance. Within our clinic, we also created a focus on Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer survivors because we know the unique physical, psychological and social of cancer survivors under 40 years of age.
The Moffitt team works closely with referring physicians to coordinate and streamline each patient’s treatment. All patients referred to Moffitt in the teen and young adult age range will automatically be offered AYA Oncology Program support services.
And, because a single day can make a world of difference when it comes to cancer, we aim to minimize referral times by responding to every referral within one business day. If you’d like to refer a patient to Moffitt, complete our convenient online form or contact a physician liaison for further assistance.
