Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) sometimes called 3D mammography, is one of the advanced breast imaging services offered at Moffitt Cancer Center. With conventional mammography, normal areas of breast tissue can overlap on the flat image, which may create the illusion that healthy tissue is abnormal. DBT obtains thinner X-Ray slices at multiple angles through the breast so that Moffitt’s subspecialized breast imaging radiologists review clearer and more precise images.

Compared to traditional mammography, tomosynthesis has an enhanced ability to detect breast cancers while fewer patients are called back for additional diagnostic imaging. These advantages make DBT a highly effective tool for the prompt detection of breast abnormalities.

At Moffitt, we offer tomosynthesis for both screening and diagnostic purposes. The images are obtained at the same time as a patient’s scheduled mammogram and integrated into that study.
