TAMPA, Fla. Moffitt Cancer Center moved up in the ranks to No. 3 on DiversityInc’s 2019 list of Top Hospitals & Health Systems. This is the fourth year in a row that Moffitt was recognized by the organization and the highest the cancer center has ever ranked on the list.

Moffitt is the only cancer center — and the only health care organization in Florida — to make the list. The Cleveland Clinic and Northwell Health placed first and second on the list, respectively.

When making its assessments, DiversityInc considers four key areas of diversity management: supplier diversity, talent pipeline, talent development and leadership accountability. Moffitt continues to excel in these areas, which is evident by the high ranking on the DiversityInc list.

“Moffitt’s values reinforce inclusion, and this honor puts a spotlight on that,” said Alan F. List, M.D., Moffitt president and CEO. “Once again, this is outstanding news and all of Moffitt’s team members can take pride in this announcement. Embracing our diversity and having an inclusive culture only helps to make Moffitt better prepared to serve our patients and the community.”

DiversityInc’s annual survey — tracking the nation’s top companies when it comes to hiring, retaining, and promoting women, minorities, people with disabilities, LGBT and veterans — is the most rigorous, data-driven survey of its kind, gauging detailed demographics based on race/ethnicity and gender at some of the largest U.S. employers.

“We are certainly honored to be recognized for our work in this area.  Diversity and inclusion are so critical to the overall success of the cancer center.  It cuts across every aspect of the important work that we do,” said B. Lee Green, Ph.D., vice president of Diversity, Public Relations and Strategic Communications at Moffitt. “To be recognized on the national level for this work speaks volumes for the support that is provided by leaders all across the cancer center. We realize that this cannot happen without the support of our most senior leaders.”

Moffitt is set apart by the work in the areas of diversity and inclusion education and training, cultural and linguistic competency, language services programs, community outreach and education efforts, and supplier diversity.  Over the past year, Moffitt delivered more than 2,800 hours of diversity and inclusion training to team members, and its in-house language services team has completed more than 7,500 patient encounters. Additionally, more than 680 underserved women were provided access to mammography screening vouchers.

The recognition from DiversityInc is among several notable awards for Moffitt. The cancer center was recently designated a 2018 Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign and named one of the Top 10 Nonprofit Companies for Executive Women. Moffitt was also recognized by the American Hospital Association as an Equity of Care Honoree.  Moffitt received the National Organization on Disability Leading Disability Employer Seal. Moffitt is a Top 10 Best Hospital for Cancer based on U.S. News & World Report.
