CAR T therapy is among the many innovative treatments that are available to cancer patients from Miami, Florida, at Moffitt Cancer Center. Located in nearby Tampa, Moffitt is a high-volume cancer center that is globally recognized for its ambitious research initiatives and leading-edge approach to treatment.

What is CAR T therapy?

CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T therapy is a breakthrough immunotherapy treatment that leverages the body’s natural disease-fighting abilities. Called a "revolution" in cancer care, this therapy utilizes a genetically altered version of the patient’s own T cells, a type of cell in the immune system. T cells normally fight bacteria and viruses but can be modified to seek out and destroy cancer cells. CAR T therapy involves taking a blood sample from the patient, separating and altering the T cells in a lab, and infusing the modified cells back into the patient’s blood supply.

What types of cancer does CAR T therapy treat?

CAR T therapy is most often used to treat malignancies that affect the blood and bone marrow, such as:

  • Multiple myeloma
  • Mantle cell lymphoma
  • Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
  • Transformed follicular lymphoma
  • Primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma
  • Follicular lymphoma
  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given breakthrough status to CAR T therapy as a treatment for B-cell lymphoma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Additional studies are currently being conducted to discover more about the advantages of this therapy and its potential impacts on health and quality of life.
