Neuro-Oncology Emergency Room (ER) Transfer Process
The Department of Neuro-Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center accepts inpatient transfers from community emergency departments for patients with suspected benign or malignant brain tumors requiring timely neurosurgical oncology care.

What you'll need to start the transfer process:

MRI of the brain with contrast that demonstrates evidence of a brain lesion consistent with possible tumor. If an MRI cannot be obtained, a CT scan with contrast may be sufficient.

Basic blood work, including CMP, CBC, PT/PTT/INR

The patient’s pertinent past medical history, including any past or active cancer history and current medications.

The patient’s current vital signs and neurological examination
What to expect during the transfer process
- Call 813-745-8404 to connect with our transfer specialist (available 24/7)
- Our specialist will identify if the patient is an existing or new patient to Moffitt and expedite the transfer
- If the patient is new to Moffitt, the specialist will activate our rapid insurance verification protocols
- Once the patient is cleared, our on-call neurosurgery faculty will contact you immediately
Note: if a patient needs further insurance verification, an authorization process will start the next business day. We anticipate this will affect less than 10% of patients.
Neuro-Oncology Program
Neuro-oncology is a medical specialty focused on the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors, along with managing the neurological side effects of cancer and cancer treatments.
Physicians trained in neuro-oncology include neurosurgeons, neurologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, neuro-radiologists and radiation oncologists. Together, we develop individualized treatment plans that may include:
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Immunotherapy and gene therapy
- Minimally invasive cranial and spinal surgery
- Complex awake craniotomies
- Stereotactic radiosurgery for brain and spine tumors
