Bladder Cancer, Kidney (Renal Cell) Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Testicular CancerDr. Pessoa is a genitourinary oncologist who specializes in the surgical treatment of prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancers. He offers a variety of treatment options including open and minimally invasive procedures such as robotic-assisted and focal therapy interventions. Dr. Pessoa earned his MD and PhD degrees from the University of São Paulo, a top ranked university in Latin America. He completed a urology residency at the same institution and practiced as a urologic surgeon at the São Paulo Cancer Institute and Sírio-Libanês hospital for several years before moving to the United States. Prior to joining Moffitt, Dr. Pessoa completed a second urology residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a urologic oncology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Pessoa’s unique experience and extensive training in open and minimally invasive techniques allows him to offer all surgical treatment options in an unbiased manner. His research interest includes the genetic and epigenetic characterization of prostate cancer and is geared towards identifying factors contributing to aggressive disease, describing the mechanisms of resistance to combination therapies, and developing urine and blood-based biomarkers for disease risk stratification. He has authored numerous peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters in urologic oncology, is an active lecturer, and serves as a reviewer for several urologic oncology scientific journals.Dr. Pessoa is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.Education & Training
