Occupational Therapy Intern
The occupational therapy clinical rotation offered at Moffitt Cancer Center is a full-time internship, requiring at least 40 hours per week. At Moffitt we only offer inpatient clinical rotations at this time. This rotation is primarily self-care based where we provide occupational therapy interventions on a one-on-one basis to patients in their private rooms located within the center. The goal of occupational therapy for cancer patients is to return each patient to their highest level of functioning following surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or other oncology treatments. By the end of the clinical rotation, you will be expected to complete the following skills independently or with minimal clinical instructor assistance: initial evaluations, discharge planning, family/caregiver training and treatments consisting of the following: self-care activities, adaptive equipment recommendations and training, orthotics/splinting, upper extremity strengthening and range of motion exercises, fine motor skills, neuromuscular re-education and cognitive training. You will have the opportunity to experience multiple kinds of oncology patients including but not limited to neuro-oncology, orthopedic oncology, head and neck cancers, breast cancer, gastrointestinal oncology, gynecologic oncology, thoracic oncology as well as patients undergoing blood and marrow transplantation. In addition, during your clinical rotation you will have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary team rounds, conferences and tumor boards to truly maximize your educational experience.
