APP Oncology Fellowship Program Specialty Tracks

Surgery Oncology
The APP fellowship is for individuals who have successfully completed their PA or APRN degree program, obtained board certification and a FL state license, and who desire to receive advanced training in surgical oncology. This fellowship will offer high-level surgical training in a variety of different surgical oncology subspecialties. Surgical care is one of the most crucial aspects of cancer treatment – and at Moffitt Cancer Center, it’s one of our most well-known specialties.
The fellows are trained to manage patients undergoing surgery as part of their cancer treatment. With emphasis on developing technical skills to perform complex surgical oncology procedures, developing skills to perform robotic/ laparoscopic procedures, plastic reconstructive surgeries, and acute care surgeries.
The participants will also be able to integrate surgical care into the entire patient care continuum, learning to manage patients in the preoperative, postoperative and surveillance settings.

Reconstructive Oncology (Plastics)
This fellowship is designed for APPs who have completed a PA or APRN program, hold board certification, and possess a Florida license. The program provides advanced training in reconstructive oncology, preparing trainees to manage oncologic conditions that require reconstructive procedures involving breast, extremity, pelvic and cutaneous sites. Fellows learn indications, risks and alternatives for reconstructive options, including local, regional and free tissue transfer, implant-based reconstruction and complex wound closure.
The fellows are trained to interpret imaging, pathology and laboratory data to guide perioperative and inpatient decisions, and to manage complex postoperative care such as flap monitoring, infection management and pain control.
The participants will also be trained in recognizing emergencies, coordinating discharges and delivering patient education. In outpatient settings, they learn wound and drain care, complication management and postoperative follow-up.

Breast Oncology
The APP fellowship is for individuals who have successfully completed their PA or APRN degree program, obtained board certification and a FL state license and who desire to receive advanced training in breast oncology, breast cancer surgery, breast plastic surgery, breast radiation and/or clinical trials conduct.
The fellows are trained to manage breast cancer with specialized treatment in complex medical therapy, understand the biology and subtypes of breast cancer and learn to engage and speak the complex language of breast oncology.
The participants will develop a skill set to enroll patients on clinical trials, become proficient in trial design and trial management, develop technical skills to perform complex surgical breast-related procedures, develop skills to perform oncoplastic procedures, plastic reconstructive surgeries, principles of radiation therapy and finally integrate these facets into the entire patient care continuum.

Genitourinary Oncology
The APP fellowship is for individuals who have successfully completed their PA or APRN degree program, obtained board certification and a FL state license and who desire to receive advanced training in genitourinary oncology, urologic oncology surgery, general urology, genitourinary radiation and/or clinical trials conduct.
The fellows are trained to manage urologic malignancies with specialized treatment in complex medical therapy, understand the various sites of genitourinary malignancies, learn to engage and speak the complex language of GU oncology, develop skill set to enroll patients on clinical trials, and become proficient in trial design and trial management.
The participants will develop technical skills to perform complex surgical urology-related procedures, develop skills to manage common urologic issues encountered in the management of oncology patients, become proficient in inpatient management of surgical urology patients and learn principles of radiation therapy and finally integrate these facets into the entire patient care continuum.

Malignant Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant/Cellular Therapy
The APP fellowship is for individuals who have completed their APRN or PA degree program and who desire to receive advanced training in malignant hematology and blood and marrow transplant and cellular immunotherapy (BMT-CI).
Fellows will rotate through the Malignant Hematology Department. During this rotation, the fellows will receive exposure and structured training on acute/chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative neoplasms, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and plasma cell malignancies.
During the BMT-CI rotation, the fellows will receive exposure and structured training in autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant, and adaptive immunotherapies as part of the treatment for leukemia, lymphoma, MDS, MPN, multiple myeloma and other solid organ malignancies.
Participants will receive training in the management of associated disease processes and complications that can arise, such as graft versus host disease and cytokine release syndrome. The fellows will also participate in clinical care, provided in the outpatient and inpatient settings, and research. The curriculum is designed to ensure maximum exposure to the entire spectrum of malignant hematology and BMT CI disease, associated syndromes, and side effects of therapies.

The APP fellowship is for individuals who have completed their APRN or PA degree program and who desire to receive advanced training in malignant hematology and cellular therapy (MHCT).
Fellows will rotate through the inpatient, outpatient, IPOP (Inpatient Outpatient) and satellite Hallandale clinic. During the rotation, the fellow will receive exposure and structured training on acute/chronic leukemias, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative neoplasms, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and plasma cell malignancies, along with autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant, and adaptive immunotherapies as part of the treatment for leukemia, lymphoma, MDS, MPN, multiple myeloma and other solid organ malignancies.
Participants will receive training in the management of associated disease processes and complications that can arise, such as graft versus host disease, cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and Immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS). The fellows will also participate in clinical care, provided in the outpatient and inpatient settings, and research. The curriculum is designed to ensure maximum exposure to the entire spectrum of malignant hematology and cellular therapy, associated syndromes, and side effects of therapies.

Internal Hospital Medicine and Acute Cancer Care
The APP fellowship is for individuals who have completed their Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) degree, received board certification, and obtained a Florida state license. This program provides advanced training in Internal Hospital Medicine and in Acute Cancer Care specialty.
Fellow will rotate through diverse specialties and receive exposure and structured training in the management of oncologic emergencies such as neutropenic fever, acute epidural spinal cord compression, tumor lysis syndrome (TLS), hypercalcemia of malignancy, typhlitis, hyper viscosity syndrome, superior vena cava syndrome (SVC), malignant pericardial effusion as well as sepsis, acute pain crisis, severe electrolyte derangements, adverse drug reaction management etc. The ACC rotation will allow the APP fellow to develop their skills in a fast-paced environment.
Participants will develop skills in the scope of medical issues admitted to the hospital. Instructions will be via dedicated faculty-provided didactics, case presentations and one-on-one preceptorships with the attending physicians and APPs specializing in hospital medicine.

Hereditary Cancer (Genetics) and High-Risk Breast Syndromes
The APP fellowship is for individuals who have completed their Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) degree, received board certification, and obtained a Florida state license. This program provides advanced training in hereditary cancer syndromes and high-risk breast diseases.
Fellows will rotate through specialties like high-risk breast surveillance, breast surgical oncology, genetics, gynecologic oncology, and clinical trial management. They will learn to assess the risk of breast cancer and other hereditary cancers, focusing on risk assessment, risk reduction, and prevention.
Participants will develop skills to create and implement surveillance plans for specific genes or high-risk lesions. They will also learn to interpret surveillance test results, know when to refer patients to specialists, and enroll patients in clinical trials.
