The MIND-BC Study: MIND Diet for Breast Cancer Cognition (MCC 23571)
Principal Investigator: Crowder, Sylvia
Objective: Aim 1: To evaluate the efficacy of the MIND diet in reducing self-reported cancer-related cognitive impairment (primary outcome) in early-stage breast cancer survivors. Aim 2: To evaluate the efficacy of the MIND diet in improving objective cancer-related cognitive impairment (i.e., best objective performance and usual objective performance), fatigue, mood, and QOL (secondary outcomes) in early-stage breast cancer survivors. Exploratory Aim 3: To explore putative mechanisms of improvements in cognition secondary to the MIND diet (inflammatory biomarkers, body composition, nutrient biomarkers, etc.) versus controls.
Breast Cancer Survivors RESET (Reducing Weight and Elevated Stress Levels using Educational and Behavioral Tools): A pilot, feasibility study (MCC 22616)
Principal Investigator: Carson, Tiffany
The main objective of the Survivor’s RESET pilot study is to test the feasibility and acceptability of a cancer-relevant, stress management-enhanced behavioral weight loss intervention for Black breast cancer survivors with obesity and elevated stress.
Participants follow a lifestyle change plan, attend 16 group-based education sessions, complete surveys, and provide basic body measurements, blood fingerstick samples, and saliva samples at 2 time points during the 4-month duration of the study. Primary outcomes include feasibility of enrollment, retention, and adherence as determined by pre-defined benchmarks. Preliminary changes in weight, perceived stress, and other patient-reported outcomes are also assessed.
Principal Investigator: Parker, Nathan (Nate)
Summary: The purpose of the study is to examine the feasibility and acceptability of an exercise and nutrition prehabilitation program for patients preparing for pancreatic cancer resection (removal).
Objective: Aim 1: Evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of PA/N and RT/N programs among patients preparing for PC resection. Feasibility metrics will include rates of recruitment (≥70%), retention (≥70%), and adherence to PA/RT prescriptions and nutrition monitoring (≥75%). Acceptability evaluation will include participant ratings of satisfaction for specific intervention components and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. Aim 2: Examine exploratory outcomes (e.g., weight and body composition, aerobic and muscular fitness, physical functioning, nutritional status, QOL) and clinical characteristics (e.g., postoperative length of stay, surgical complications, receipt of adjuvant therapy) among PA/N and RT/N participants. Aim 3: Compare clinical and treatment outcomes (e.g., weight and body composition, serum albumin, postoperative length of stay, surgical complications, receipt of adjuvant therapy) between study participants and a retrospectively-identified, usual care comparison group.
Augmented Reality as an Adjunct to Quitline Counseling for Smoking Cessation (MCC 23633)
Principal Investigator: Vinci Christine
Study Title: Beyond Smoking: Using Augmented Reality to Address Vaping and Dual Use in Emerging Adulthood
Objective: Aim 1. To develop and pilot test e-cigarette AR cues for dual and e-cigarette-only users aged 18-24. Interviews will be conducted with individuals aged 18-24 who are dual users (i.e., use combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes) and e-cigarette only users to gather information on the types of e-cigarettes used and the context of use, and to obtain feedback on the existing AR app. Feedback will inform the development of the new set of AR e-cigarette cues to be integrated into the app, along with other app modifications relevant to this age group. The revised app will then be pilot tested among 5 individuals for additional feedback. Aim 2. To obtain feedback from key community college stakeholders about existing and future student programs for dual users and/or e-cigarette-only users. We will conduct interviews to collect information on existing student programs on e-cigarette use and to understand administrators' perspectives on facilitating future intervention engagement. Stakeholders will also provide insight into campus policies and culture that may affect the future implementation of the intervention.
