Surgery for Breast Cancer Available for Individuals in St. Petersburg, FL
Surgery for breast cancer is available at Moffitt Cancer Center, located just across the bridge from St. Petersburg, Florida, in Tampa. At Moffitt, we are committed to providing each patient with an individualized treatment plan that improves the likelihood of a successful outcome and a better quality of life. Because Moffitt remains at the forefront of researching the latest and most effective cancer treatment options, we have been designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute and are the only cancer center based in Florida to have earned this designation.
The cancer experts in The Don & Erika Wallace Comprehensive Breast Program collaborate regularly as a tumor board to review each patient’s case. This team considers many different factors, including the size and stage of the tumor as well as the patient’s overall health. These factors influence the type of surgery or other treatment that may be best for the patient. At Moffitt, we offer the following breast cancer surgery options:
- Mastectomy – Removes part or all of the breast
- Lumpectomy – Removes the tumor from the breast as well as some of the surrounding healthy tissue
- Axillary node dissection – Removes the lymph nodes in the armpit region
- Sentinel node mapping and biopsy – Takes a tissue sample to diagnose the stage of the cancer
- Breast reconstruction – Rebuilds the breast following a mastectomy
In addition to breast cancer surgery, Moffitt provides other treatment options, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Supportive care services are also available in the same location to help our patients with the emotional and physical challenges of overcoming breast cancer. For patients traveling from St. Petersburg, FL, and other communities, Moffitt can also provide assistance finding local accommodations that meet our stringent standards for hygiene and infection control. Together, these services help ensure our patients can focus on recovering without unnecessary hassles.
