Moffitt Cancer Center patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) aren’t cared for by just one doctor, but rather an entire multispecialty team. Our Malignant Hematology program features a team of medical oncologists, hematologists, pathologists, surgeons and other MDS doctors who specialize exclusively in MDS, and take a collaborative approach to treatment that focuses on attacking MDS from a variety of angles while comprehensively addressing our patients’ needs.

Beyond our multispecialty team, there are several reasons why Moffitt is considered to be a worldwide leader in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of MDS:

  • Every MDS doctor at Moffitt has ample experience treating all forms of MDS and acute myeloid leukemia, which can develop from more aggressive cases of MDS. In fact, we have one of the largest MDS programs in the United States. This means our MDS doctors have a unique level of experience treating even the rarest forms of MDS, and this expertise translates into better outcomes and quality of life for our patients.
  • MDS cases are regularly and carefully reviewed by Moffitt’s tumor board, which refines each patient’s individualized treatment plan according to his or her progress and specific needs.
  • Moffitt is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center – the only one based in Florida. This distinction speaks directly to our commitment to molecular studies, cancer research and our robust clinical trial program, which is aimed at discovering new, innovative treatments for MDS and other malignancies.

Furthermore, patients in Moffitt’s MDS program have access to a full range of supportive care in the same location. Psychosocial counseling, side effect management, dietary advice and more are provided to our patients to help improve quality of life during the treatment process with an MDS doctor.
