Thyroid Cancer Clinical Trials
Thyroid cancer clinical trials offer certain patients an opportunity to be among the first to benefit from promising new drugs and therapies. Prior to being made available to qualified patients through a clinical trial, a treatment undergoes extensive testing to ensure its safety. The purpose of the clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of the new treatment in comparison to other treatments that are currently available. In general, this evaluation process is standard for all new treatments. Even the current "gold standard" treatments for thyroid cancer were once available only through clinical trials.
At Moffitt Cancer Center, we have a robust clinical trials program with active protocols for thyroid cancer. Some examples of treatments under evaluation include:
- New chemotherapy drugs
- New combinations of existing chemotherapy drugs
- New approaches to radiation therapy
- New combinations of chemotherapy and radiation treatment
- New approaches to surgery
- New ways to manage symptoms and side effects that can occur during and after treatment
Thyroid cancer clinical trials have led to advances in medical science that have helped researchers understand how and why cancerous tumors develop and spread. As the knowledge base continues to grow, physicians are making progress in identifying ways to prevent, diagnose and treat thyroid cancer by adding new standards of care or replacing existing ones. Clinical trials remain the most reliable scientific method to find out if a new treatment works better than the current standard of care.
As the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, Moffitt continues to lead the way in cancer research. Our multispecialty team of thyroid cancer experts works collaboratively to ensure that each patient receives highly individualized, supportive care, whether that includes a clinical trial or another advanced treatment option.
