In most cases, the experts at Moffitt recommend surgery as the first-line treatment for thyroid cancer. Our surgeons have extensive experience and highly refined skills in performing the following procedures:
- Total (or near-total) thyroidectomy – A surgeon removes the entire thyroid (or as much of the gland as possible) through an incision in the front of the neck. This is the most commonly recommended surgical approach used for treating thyroid cancer.
- Lobectomy and lymph node dissection – This technique may be appropriate to address a small, well-defined tumor that shows no evidence of spread beyond the thyroid gland. A surgeon accesses the thyroid through an incision in the front of the neck, then removes the cancerous lobe, the isthmus (a small piece of tissue that connects the left and right lobes) and some of the surrounding lymph nodes.
In addition to surgery, other thyroid cancer treatment options include chemotherapy, external-beam radiation therapy, hormone treatment or radioactive iodine (radioiodine) therapy. Moffitt’s dedicated research team is also continually evaluating the effectiveness of new treatments, and through our robust clinical trials program, we offer a number of promising therapies that aren’t yet available elsewhere. Additionally, Moffitt can provide organ preservation therapy, as well as speech therapy and swallowing therapy as necessary after surgery.
Moffitt welcomes patients from near and far. Regardless of whether you live in the Clearwater, FL, area or elsewhere, we can provide the individualized guidance you need to make informed choices about thyroid cancer treatment.
