Welcome to the Thoracic Pathology Fellowship Program at Moffitt Cancer Center. This program is designed for pathologists seeking advanced training in thoracic pathology, including both neoplastic (focused) and non-neoplastic diseases.
Program Description
The Thoracic Pathology Fellowship at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, FL, is designed to provide comprehensive training in thoracic pathology, including both neoplastic (focused) and non-neoplastic diseases. The one-year, ACGME-accredited program aims to enhance diagnostic skills, develop research capabilities, and prepare fellows for successful careers in academic and community hospital settings. The fellow will actively participate in research projects in oncologic thoracic pathology, and in teaching pathology residents, hematology/oncology fellows and visiting international physicians.
Program Highlights
- Comprehensive Training: In-depth exposure to thoracic pathology, including gross inspection, dissection, frozen section interpretation and generation of comprehensive and personalized pathology reports.
- Multidisciplinary Approach: Integration into tumor boards, molecular diagnostics laboratory, thoracic radiology and oncology clinical services.
- Research Opportunities: Participation in basic and translational research, including NIH-funded projects and clinical trials.
- Teaching and Mentoring: Active involvement in the training of medical students, pathology residents, surgical oncology fellows and visiting scholars.

Educational Goals and Objectives
- Enhance Diagnostic Skills: Develop proficiency in the evaluation of thoracic surgical and consult cases, with the opportunity to also be exposed to cytology cases.
- Develop Research Competency: Gain experience in basic and translational research, including publishing abstracts and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
- Foster Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Understand the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of thoracic diseases.
- Promote Teaching and Mentoring: Participate in the education and training of medical students, residents and fellows.
- Ensure Diversity and Inclusion: Implement strategies to achieve diversity in the recruitment, selection and retention of fellows and faculty.
Training Opportunities
- Clinical Rotations: Extensive hands-on experience in thoracic pathology, including grossing, frozen sections and case sign-out. Opportunities to do elective rotations in molecular pathology, thoracic radiology and other desired topics of thoracic medicine (surgery, thoracic oncology, etc.).
- Research: Dedicated research time allotted and required to be involved in departmental basic and translational research activities and contribute to publishing abstracts and peer-reviewed articles. The fellow is expected to complete at least one research project before the end of the fellowship year and to present this at a local or national meeting. Support for the research activity of the fellows is provided by the Moffitt Cancer Center GME office and the research coordinator.
- Educational Conferences: Participation in weekly didactic sessions, journal clubs and multidisciplinary tumor boards.
- Mentorship: Guidance and support from experienced faculty members throughout the fellowship.
