Giving Blood, Giving Strength: A Donation That Saves Lives
This January, as we recognize National Blood Donor Month, we pause to spotlight a powerful act of generosity that directly supports Moffitt Cancer Center patients and the care teams who serve them every day: blood donation.
For many cancer patients, blood and platelet transfusions are not optional, they are a critical part of treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation and bone marrow transplants can reduce the body’s ability to produce healthy blood cells, making transfusions essential for recovery, strength and survival. A single blood donation can help multiple patients and offer renewed energy and hope during some of the most challenging moments of their journey.
At Moffitt, blood donors play an extraordinary role in patient care. Each donation helps:
- Support lifesaving cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and stem cell transplants
- Reduce treatment delays, allowing patients to stay on schedule with care
- Improve quality of life, easing fatigue, shortness of breath and other side effects
“Blood and platelet donations are a lifeline for our cancer patients. These donations allow Moffitt to safely deliver treatments, manage complications and support patients through every phase of care. Without a consistent blood supply, many therapies simply wouldn’t be possible,” said Richard Gammon, MD, medical director of Transfusion Medicine at Moffitt.
Behind every transfusion is a donor who chose to give — in most cases without ever meeting the patient whose life they touched. That selfless decision reminds us that care extends beyond clinical walls and into our broader community.
This January, the community is invited to participate in upcoming blood donation opportunities and help ensure a steady, reliable blood supply for cancer patients. Whether you are a first-time or regular donor, your contribution makes a lasting difference.
