When the summer sun is blazing, nothing hits the spot like a frozen popsicle. Unfortunately, many store-bought versions are loaded with added sugars, artificial flavors and preservatives.

Moffitt Cancer Center research chef Julissa “Jules” Graziano has a better idea: a homemade orange-ginger creamsicle that’s refreshing, flavorful and good for you.

A Cancer Friendly Twist on a Classic Treat

These Creamsicles aren’t just delicious; they include ingredients that can support wellness during and after cancer treatment.

  • Whole oranges provide vitamin C, which helps support immune health.
  • Greek yogurt offers probiotics that may benefit gut health, which can be affected by certain cancer treatments.
  • Fresh ginger adds bright flavor, may help ease nausea and is a natural anti-inflammatory rich in antioxidants.

Ingredients

Makes 10 popsicles, about 3 ounces each

  • 15 ounces oranges (about 4 to 5 large Navel or Cara Cara), zest and fruit
  • 15 ounces plain, low-fat Greek yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon agave syrup (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

Instructions

  1. Zest 2 to 3 oranges and add zest to blender. Peel all oranges, remove seeds and add fruit to blender.
  1. Add yogurt, vanilla, agave (if using) and ginger. Blend until smooth.
  1. Pour mixture into popsicle molds and freeze at least 6 hours, or overnight.

No molds? Use small cups on a tray, cover with foil or plastic wrap, poke a stick through the center and freeze.

Make It Your Own

  • Agave substitutes: Try Stevia, maple syrup or honey. You can also use very ripe fruit or roast your fruit to concentrate the natural sugars.
  • Fruit swaps: Try fresh or frozen mango, peaches or berries.
  • Dairy-free: Use plant-based yogurt or milk for a vegan version.
  • For kids and pups: Choose fruits that are safe for little ones and pets.
