Mission Control Center Optimizes Nursing Care
On the second floor of Moffitt Cancer Center’s Magnolia clinic, there’s a room where it all comes together. Moffitt’s Mission Control Center, which launched in June 2025, serves as a centralized space designed to enhance care coordination, support nursing staff and improve the patient experience across the Magnolia and McKinley hospital campuses.
On one side of the center, virtual nurses assist with patient admissions, discharges, education and continuous monitoring, freeing up time for bedside nurses to focus more directly on patient care. On the opposite side, a dedicated team oversees patient placement and manages hospital flow in real time, helping reduce delays and improve transitions between units.
The center is staffed by experienced registered nurses who bring deep clinical knowledge to these specialized roles. Many transitioned from inpatient floors to help shape this innovative approach to patient care.
“This is more than just a room with monitors. It’s a new model of nursing collaboration,” Chief Nursing Officer Kelley Gonzalvo, DNP, explained. “This center was built to better support our bedside teams and ensure our patients receive seamless, high-quality care. It also allows us to improve inpatient capacity while enhancing system access for our ambulatory patients, ultimately benefiting the entire continuum of care.”
