Moffitt Brings Colorectal Cancer Education to Puerto Rico

Julian Sanchez, MD
Since 2011, Moffitt Cancer Center has been committed to providing free educational events to the community in Puerto Rico twice a year.
On Nov. 16, more than 100 guests gathered in San Juan to hear surgical oncologist Julian Sanchez, MD, discuss the latest advances in the early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer. Many of those in attendance were cancer patients and survivors who have sought services at Moffitt.
The event marked the 26th time that Moffitt’s International Patient Services Department hosted the “Charlas sobre cancer” program.
According to the Puerto Rican Gastrointestinal Association, colorectal cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Puerto Rico among both men and women. Approximately 1,800 new cases of colorectal cancer are reported on the island each year and nearly 700 people die from the disease.
