Need Help Navigating Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment? Read This.
Moffitt Cancer Center recently hosted a Facebook Live to help patients navigate Medicare Advantage open enrollment, which runs through March 31, 2026.
The event featured experts from Moffitt’s Financial Clearance Unit, including Javier Gonzalez, Financial Clearance Unit Supervisor, and Danielle Rodriguez, Financial Clearance Unit Manager, who shared guidance on selecting plans, understanding coverage and addressing recent network changes.
“Having the right insurance coverage is essential for patients and their families,” Gonzalez said. “We’re here to help you understand your options and make informed decisions.”
Understanding Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
Medicare Advantage open enrollment allows beneficiaries to make changes to their existing plans or switch back to traditional Medicare.
“This period is a great opportunity to review your coverage, consider your health care needs, and make sure your plan works for you. The enrollment window closes March 31, 2026,” Gonzalez said.
Network Changes for Humana Plans
A major topic addressed during the session was changes to Humana Medicare Advantage coverage.
“Starting July 1, 2026, some Humana plans will no longer be in network with Moffitt,” Gonzalez said. “Patients with Humana Medicare PPO plans may continue care with possible higher out-of-pocket costs, while HMO plans may require additional approvals. Patients should contact Humana directly to understand how these changes affect them.”
For patients already undergoing treatment, continuity of care ensures that they can continue seeing their current providers for a limited period, even if the plan is out of network. After Dec. 29, 2026, additional authorizations may be needed to maintain care at Moffitt.
Choosing the Right Plan
Experts emphasize that patients should evaluate monthly premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, provider networks, prescription coverage, referral requirements and specialty care coverage, especially for ongoing or complex treatments like cancer care.
“Understanding both health insurance and prescription coverage is key,” Rodriguez said. “Patients should review their medications and confirm coverage to avoid unexpected costs.”
