The Healing Power of Furry Companions for Cancer Patients
For patients facing the physical and emotional tolls of cancer, comfort and companionship can be as vital as medicine. As we celebrate National Dog Day, we are reminded of the profound impact our furry friends can have on our well-being.
At Moffitt Cancer Center, therapy dogs are more than just pets — they are vital companions offering support and healing during some of the most difficult moments of a patient’s journey. One patient, Amy Vigil, shares her powerful story of the bond she formed with therapy pup Feller during her treatment.
Buzz and Feller were by Amy Vigil's side for every treatment, offering support and comfort throughout her journey.
Vigil first met Feller and his owner, Buzz, during her very first chemotherapy session at Moffitt International Plaza. “Throughout my eight treatments, Feller was with me from day one,” she said. “From the moment we met, Feller’s calming presence allowed me to shift my focus from the anxiety of chemotherapy to the sweet, loving dog who never left my side.”
What made this relationship even more special was the consistency of their visits. Buzz ensured that Feller was always there for Vigil, visiting her every Tuesday during her treatments.
“Buzz always saved the infusion center for last so Feller could spend extra time with the patients,” Vigil said. By her second visit, Feller recognized her — even as she began to lose her hair. Their bond was unmistakable, and Feller’s affection helped Vigil relax and feel comforted during each session.
Vigil wasn’t the only one who cherished these visits. Her friends and family, who accompanied her to treatments, were equally grateful for the time spent with Feller. One of Vigil’s most memorable moments was when she rang the bell to signify the end of her treatment. During this special day, Feller was by her side, a moment she says she will never forget.
Feller isn’t alone in this important work. Moffitt’s Pet Therapy Program includes a team of certified dogs who visit patients, visitors and staff across the cancer center’s different locations. The program was established over 30 years ago, and today there are over 50 dogs spreading comfort and joy wherever they go.

Feller was also by Vigil's side when she rang the bell at the completion of her treatment.
At Moffitt, volunteers and their therapy dogs like Feller play an essential role in supporting patients through their cancer journey. The bond between patients and therapy dogs is nothing short of transformative. For patients, who often spend hours in treatment or recovery, these dogs offer a welcome distraction and emotional relief. Vigil encourages anyone who has the opportunity to meet any of these special dogs to do so. “Thank you, Feller and Buzz, for the love and support you gave me!” she added.
As we celebrate National Dogs Day, we celebrate Feller and all the dogs who bring comfort, joy and healing to our patients. Their presence offers more than just a wagging tail; it provides the love and strength that help our patients face each day with hope.
