Spending time outdoors is more than just a break from daily routines; it’s an opportunity to recharge physically and mentally. That’s especially beneficial for those facing cancer, whether they’re in treatment, recovery or supporting a loved one.  

In honor of National Park and Recreation Month this July, we’re highlighting how local parks and green spaces can play a meaningful role in boosting overall well-being. 

The Benefits of Nature 

Research shows that time in nature may help reduce stress, improve mood and support physical recovery. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, 92% of U.S. adults say they experience a mental health boost after spending time in their local parks. 

Gentle outdoor activities like walking, stretching or simply enjoying the sights and sounds of nature can promote relaxation and emotional balance, which are essential parts of wellness during a cancer journey.  

Tampa Bay Parks Offer a Variety of Experiences 

The Tampa Bay area is home to several parks that provide opportunities for mindful movement or peaceful moments, including:

  • Alafia River State Park A reclaimed phosphate mine offering some of Florida’s greatest elevation changes, perfect for hiking, horseback riding, canoeing and fishing. 
  • Lettuce Lake Park Known for its shaded boardwalks, birdwatching and quiet nature trails. 
  • Weedon Island Preserve This 3,000-acre natural area is perfect for hiking, birdwatching, fishing and kayaking. 

Simple Ways To Enjoy the Outdoors 

You don’t need to go on a long hike to benefit from time outside. Here are a few simple ideas: 

  • Take a short walk during the cooler parts of the day. 
  • Find a quiet spot to sit and take in your surroundings. 
  • Bring a caregiver or loved one to share the experience. 
  • Practice gentle breathing or stretching in the fresh air. 

Remember Sun Safety and Hydration 

Florida’s sunshine is beautiful, but it’s important to protect yourself. Apply sunscreen, wear UV-protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, and be sure to drink plenty of water, especially during the summer months.
