Overview
Stefania graduated from the University of South Florida in the fall of 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology, and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. She then graduated with a Master of Science in Public Health with a concentration in Genetic Counseling through the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health in the Spring of 2021. Upon completing her master’s degree, she joined the Genetic Risk Assessment Clinic at Moffitt Cancer Center as their first bilingual genetic counselor and is thrilled to be providing cancer genetic services to patients in Spanish. Prior to returning to graduate school for her master’s, Stefania worked at the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine at Winnie Palmer Hospital in Orlando, Florida where she also became a certified interpreter. Stefania is highly passionate about cancer genetics and received the Florida Association of Genetic Counselor’s Research Grant for her thesis project entitled “Evaluation of a Spanish-language Educational Tool for Inherited Cancer”. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and after living in four different Latin American countries, Stefania has developed a special interest in working with Latinos living in the U.S. She served as Chair of a committee of the Florida Association of Genetic Counselors from 2021-2024. In this role, she successfully created a student scholarship to help alleviate financial barriers for students who are applying to genetic counseling school. Given her substantial contributions to increasing access for genetic services, Stefania was awarded the Cultural Advocacy award by the National Society of Genetic Counselors in 2024. In January of 2025, she accepted the role of incoming Co-Chair of the Spanish Development Special Interest Group for the National Society of Genetic Counselors. She is heavily involved in community outreach and has served as thesis committee advisor, a collaborative assistant professor for the University of South Florida genetic counseling program, and a student mentor. In April of 2025, she was one of 6 recipients of the University of South Florida's Outstanding Young Alumni Awards.
