You just heard those words, “you have cancer.” You feel shocked and overwhelmed. Suddenly your life as you knew it has changed. Not only for you, but your family, your children. As a million things race through your head, you try to comprehend how to face this new reality, and how to talk to your children about your cancer diagnosis.

Facing cancer is hard. Talking to your children about it is even harder, but you aren’t alone. At Moffitt Cancer Center, our Families First program is here to help you navigate how to have those difficult conversations with honesty, care and support. Families First acknowledges that a caregiver’s cancer diagnosis and treatment impacts the whole family.

When talking to children about cancer, have a simple, honest and age-appropriate conversation. Don't be afraid to use the word cancer. This is beneficial as it helps to avoid confusion with other illnesses, and this builds trust from being open and honest. Reassure your children that they did not cause the illness. Stick to your children's routines as much as possible and encourage questions and open conversation.

How Families First Supports Parents and Kids at Moffitt

Families First helps by providing resources to primary caregivers and their minor children to help them acclimate to their loved one's cancer journey. Primary caregivers can collaborate with oncology social workers on how to communicate and support their children. Backpacks are provided to caregivers and children ages 1-18 to help facilitate, empower, encourage communication and bring awareness to the caregiver’s cancer diagnosis. These backpacks provide an educational book, comfort item, stress reduction tools and an outlet for creative expression.

Families First also has a lending library to provide additional books and resources to families and is located in the Moffitt Patient Library. Families First also hosts events throughout the year. These events provide expressive arts, age-appropriate therapeutic games, a parent group and snacks. These events promote support, healing, connection and a sense of normalcy.

You don't have to face your cancer diagnosis alone. Families First is here to provide assistance to help you navigate your journey with your children by your side.
