Meet the Band

Happy Holidays! From the ReMissions

Dr. Patrick Hwu, Keyboard

Hwu is the President and CEO of Moffitt and a Medical Oncologist Researcher. Raised on classical music and musicals, Hwu began piano in third grade and played rock and blues in high school. A fan of James Taylor and Queen, he believes music nourishes creativity and enhances resilience.

Dr. Dana Ataya, Lead Vocals

Ataya is a breast radiologist, medical educator and researcher. Music was central to Ataya’s upbringing, singing with her grandmother and learning piano from her mother. She also plays acoustic guitar and loves soul and jazz. As a songwriter, she’s penned songs about hope, community and cancer awareness.

Dr. Mark Robertson-Tessi, Guitar

Mark is a researcher in mathematical oncology. He began his musical journey at age 6 with piano and expanded into jazz, newgrass, and Irish music, playing mandolin and guitar. He believes music is fundamental to the soul, offering a unique way to connect with ourselves and others, whether playing or listening.

Dr. James Mulé, Guitar

Mulé is a researcher and Moffitt's Associate Center Director of Translational Science. He was introduced to music early, attending opera with his grandfather. He later taught himself guitar by ear. He honed his skills with top instructors across the nation. Mulé believes playing music challenges and nourishes the soul.

Jeff Leighton, RN, CCRN, Bass

Leighton is a Registered Nurse in Moffitt's Intensive Care Unit. He was introduced to music by his mother, watching "American Bandstand," and Detroit radio fueled his love for blues, R&B, Motown, and soul. Leighton believes playing music feeds the soul and creates magic with others.

Ron Zalva, Drums

Zalva is on Moffitt's security team. He began playing drums at 5 and formed his first band at 12. He later played with The Paragons and loves all genres, including jazz, rock, blues, soul, and Latin. Zalva believes music feeds the soul and embodies, "Music is what feelings sound like."

Vince DiMartino, Trumpet

DiMartino, a world-renowned trumpet player who’s performed with jazz greats, is also a patient at Moffitt Cancer Center. He connected with Dr. Hwu and The ReMissions during an appointment and now joins the band for practices and gigs. For the band, playing with him is a reminder of their mission’s impact.
