Moffitt Cancer Center’s annual Faculty Appreciation and Recognition Ceremony celebrates the exceptional accomplishments of hundreds of faculty members. It’s an opportunity to highlight those who persistently push boundaries and pioneer advancements in cancer treatment.

The top honor, the Charles C. Williams Jr. Physician of the Year award, is given to a member of the medical staff who truly embodies the finest qualities of a physician. The recipient of the award demonstrates a commitment to quality care and extraordinary clinical skills and expertise.

Faculty, team members, patients, trainees and students can submit nominations, and the previous physician of the year winners form a committee to make the final selection.

This year’s recipient is Philippe Spiess, MD, a genitourinary oncologist and the assistant chief of surgical services. This prestigious recognition not only acknowledges his clinical expertise but also the deep connections he builds with patients and colleagues alike.

Specializing in urologic oncology, Spiess pursued rigorous training before joining Moffitt. His decision to focus on cancer care stemmed from a drive to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

“Cancer care is unique in that you directly impact patients in a profound way. It can be emotionally challenging in the inability to not help everyone who entrusts you with their care, but even if you help just one person, the fulfillment is immeasurable,” Spiess said.

Find what fulfills you. Medicine isn’t just a career, it’s a lifelong commitment. Have mentors who will challenge you and guide you, and always maintain balance in your life. A fulfilled physician is a better physician.

Spiess remains unwavering in his commitment to patient care. He values the lasting relationships he builds, often staying in touch with patients who share updates about their lives. These connections serve as a reminder of the impactful influence a physician can have.

Receiving the Physician of the Year award is particularly meaningful for Spiess, as it honors the legacy of Dr. Charles Williams, the late Moffitt thoracic oncologist known for his dedication to patient care. Being recognized by peers, patients and the institution affirms Spiess’s dedication to medicine.

At Moffitt, Spiess finds immense reward in working alongside a dedicated team that is relentless in their pursuit of innovative cancer treatments. “We constantly collaborate and brainstorm new ways to improve patient outcomes. It’s a place where every team member is invested in the well-being of our patients,” Spiess said.

For the next generation of physicians, Spiess advises: “Find what fulfills you. Medicine isn’t just a career, it’s a lifelong commitment. Have mentors who will challenge you and guide you, and always maintain balance in your life. A fulfilled physician is a better physician.”

True to his character, Spiess dedicates this honor to his patients, calling them the real heroes who inspire him to continuously strive for excellence in cancer treatment.
