Multi-Ancestry Genome-Wide Association Study of Kidney Cancer Identifies 63 Susceptibility Regions

Researchers conducted a large study involving over 29,000 kidney cancer patients and more than 835,000 individuals without the disease. They discovered 63 specific areas in human DNA associated with a higher risk of developing kidney cancer; 50 of these areas were previously unknown. 

When researchers took a closer look at the data, they found certain genetic differences were linked to the two main types of kidney cancer: clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and papillary renal cell carcinoma. Notably, a particular genetic area among individuals of African ancestry was found to nearly triple the risk of developing ccRCC. 

These findings enhance our understanding of how genetics influence kidney cancer risk and may lead to better methods for predicting and preventing the disease in the future.

Genomic Classification and Individualized Prognosis in Multiple Myeloma

Researchers have developed a new tool to help predict outcomes for patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM). This tool uses information from patients' genes and clinic visits to create a model to predict a multiple myeloma patient’s response to different treatment options. 

By analyzing data from 1,933 patients, the model offers more  accurate predictions for survival and disease progression than traditional methods. This advancement can guide doctors in choosing the best treatment plans for individual patients, leading to more personalized and effective care.
