How Radiology Supports You
Radiology plays a vital role in health care, helping doctors diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. At Moffitt Cancer Center, imaging is an integral part of our patient care, supporting every stage of health:
Screening Exams
Even when feeling well, imaging helps with preventative care.
Diagnostic Imaging
For patients feeling unwell, it assists in identifying issues that need attention. It helps physicians make decisions on next steps for treatment if needed.
Procedural Support
During surgeries or procedures, imaging guides precise interventions.
Post-Treatment Follow-Ups
After care or treatment, imaging ensures patients are on the right path to recovery.
Radiology exams typically don’t hurt, but you may have to get an injection of contrast or radio isotopes for certain types of imaging.
Types of Radiology Exams Offered:
- X-rays involve taking a picture of the inside of any part of the body. X-rays are used for many different things.
- Computed Tomography (CT) scans involve taking images using an x-ray-producing tube inside a donut-shaped machine, through which your body travels while you lie on a table. Sometimes this scan includes an injection of a liquid contrast in your vein.
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) involves taking images using a magnet, radiofrequency and water molecules in your body. Sometimes an MRI includes an injection of a liquid contrast in your vein.
- Ultrasounds involve taking pictures of the body using warm gel and a probe-type camera that slides easily over your body. It utilizes sound waves that bounce off organs and fluids in the body.
- Nuclear Medicine involves taking images of the body usually after you receive an injection of radio isotopes. This includes things like bone scans, PET scans and more.
The Radiology Imaging team at Moffitt has introduced additional opportunities to enhance access to necessary exams, offering:
- Multiple convenient locations.
- Evening and weekend appointments at select sites.
As we advance in research and treatment, timely imaging is essential to prevent delays in your care plan. When scheduling your imaging exams, please ask about our evening and weekend availability to support flexibility in your care journey.
