  • What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, or people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).

  • Will I be automatically enrolled in Medicare when I turn 65?

Please visit Medicare.gov for more information

  • What is Medicare Open Enrollment?

Medicare Open Enrollment happens annually. This is when people with Medicare insurance can change their health plans and prescription drug coverage to better meet their needs.  It's important to review your coverage because medicare plans change every year.

  • When is the Medicare Open Enrollment period?
    • October 15 – December 7, 2025
    • Coverage begins on January 1, 2026

    • Medicare Special Enrollment Period runs through March 31, 2026
    • Coverage begins July 1, 2026
  • What is Medigap?

A Medigap (or Medicare Supplement) policy helps fill "gaps" in Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. There are many forms of Medigap policies, each offering different benefits. These plans can help pay some remaining healthcare costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Your initial Medigap open enrollment period is the best time to buy a policy.  During that time, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state, even if you have prior medical conditions. If you're able to purchase a Medigap plan later, options may be limited, or it may cost more due to past or present health conditions.

For more information on Medigap, please visit Medicare.gov

  • My Medicare Advantage plan changed, will I have to stop seeing my Moffitt doctors or unenroll from my clinical trial?

Medicare Advantage plans have changed their network status with Moffitt. These changes were made by the insurance companies, not by Moffitt. Moffitt remains in-network for Original Medicare and several other Medicare Advantage plans.

If you are in active treatment, you may qualify for Transition of Care or Continuity of Care coverage, which allows your treatment to continue at the in-network benefit level for a limited period.

Other options available to seek treatment at Moffitt include:

    • Continue care at Moffitt on an out-of-network basis; some plans offer out-of-network benefits at a higher cost
    • Switch Medicare Advantage plans during an applicable enrollment period (see Open Enrollment periods above)
    • Return to Original Medicare if eligible

If you are on a clinical trial, Medicare will continue to cover routine care costs not paid by the trial sponsor.

Our Medicare Insurance Navigators can explain what each option means to you. They can be reached at 813-745-8717 or FCUInsuranceNavigator@Moffitt.org.

  • Can I switch my Medicare plan?

Possibly. The main enrollment windows are:

    • Medicare Annual Open Enrollment: October 15 – December 7 (changes take effect January 1).
    • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31.
    • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): may apply if your plan dropped a provider, you moved, lost other coverage, or meet other criteria.
  • Who can I talk to if I still have questions about Medicare?
