  • What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, or people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).

  • Will I be automatically enrolled in Medicare when I turn 65?

Please visit Medicare.gov for more information

  • What is the Medicare Open Enrollment Period?

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from  October 15 to December 7.  During this period, you can change your Medicare plans and prescription drug coverage to better meet your healthcare needs.  It is important to select a Medicare plan such as Original Medicare so you can gain access to Moffitt’s cancer experts.

  • When is the Medicare Open Enrollment period?
    • October 15 – December 7, 2026
    • Coverage begins on January 1, 2027

    • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period runs from January 1 – March 31
    • Coverage begins July 1, 2027
  • What is Medigap?

A Medigap (or Medicare Supplement) policy helps fill "gaps" in Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. There are many forms of Medigap policies, each offering different benefits. These plans can help pay some remaining healthcare costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Your initial Medigap open enrollment period is the best time to buy a policy.  During that time, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state, even if you have prior medical conditions. If you're able to purchase a Medigap plan later, options may be limited, or it may cost more due to past or present health conditions.

For more information on Medigap, please visit Medicare.gov.

  • Can I switch my Medicare plan?

Possibly. The main enrollment windows are:

    • Medicare Annual Open Enrollment: October 15 – December 7 (changes take effect January 1).
    • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31.
    • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): may apply if your plan dropped a provider, you moved, lost other coverage, or meet other criteria.
  • Who can I talk to if I still have questions about Medicare?
