2024 MOSI Summer Camp
It is never too early to learn about the impact of cancer research and medicine! The Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) recently partnered with Moffitt Cancer Center for a fun and educational experience for their students. Over the course of two dynamic summer camp days, students of ages middle through high school were immersed in an educational journey where they learned about the different roles that go into the central purpose of curing and treating cancer. Professionals from across multiple departments at Moffitt collaborated in providing a comprehensive experience that included presentations, demonstrations, interactive learning games, panels and discussions.
Students had the opportunity to learn directly from doctors, including Drs. Brian Czerniecki and Brandon Blue, how to become doctors and what the day-to-day life looks like for a doctor who specializes in cancer, an oncologist.
In a hands-on demonstration, Dr. Leshawn Richards guided students through the use of an ultrasound machine and how to clear a patient’s airway.
Dr. Ranjita Poudel, an applied postdoctoral fellow in the Health Outcomes and Behavior Department, delivered a lesson on the dangers of vaping and the addictive nature of nicotine. Her presentation highlighted the importance of understanding the advertisement strategy of these companies through how they focus on fun colors and flavors. The statistics of how many middle and high schoolers vape Dr. Poudel shared were impactful enough to spark conversation amongst the students.
Individuals from the Machine Learning Department showcased how mathematics and artificial intelligence are playing an innovative role in cancer research and treatment. Students learned about machine learning concepts, saw how a team operates within this field and interacted with a chatbot designed by the machine learning team.
Dr. Julio Vazquez Martinez, a postdoctoral fellow from the Immunology Department, developed an engaging game that demonstrates cells’ immune response. This interactive activity captivated the students, making complex scientific concepts digestible and enjoyable.
Dr. Krissy Smith, a postdoctoral fellow researching cancer prevention through the realm of nutrition, gave a presentation titled, “Exploring how Certain Foods can Help Protect you from Cancer.”
Dr. Zoe Zhou and her colleagues from the BioEngineering Department brought in a microscope and introduced a skin cancer cell for the students to examine.
In addition, Kiana Antoine, Justin Denis and Devon DeLoach participated in a cancer career panel, sharing their experiences and research areas. This panel gave students a broader understanding of the diverse career opportunities in cancer research and treatment.
The summer camp experience at MOSI, guided by the skilled professionals at Moffitt, was a great success. The students left with a wealth of knowledge and inspiration about cancer research and medicine. We sincerely thank all the participants and leadership teams whose hard work made this event possible and eagerly anticipate continuing this annual tradition for years to come!
