A Journey in Curiosity and Mentorship: Dr. Anuraag Bukkuri’s Path from Moffitt to London
Dr. Anuraag Bukkuri began his journey at Moffitt Cancer Center in 2020 in the Cancer PhD Program. In 2024, he earned his PhD in Integrated Mathematical Oncology under the mentorship of Dr. Joel S. Brown in the Department of Integrated Mathematical Oncology.

Following graduation, Dr. Bukkuri completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Computational and Systems Biology in partnership with the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and held additional affiliations within those departments at the Center for Philosophy of Science and the Center for Evolutionary Biology and Medicine. Through his affiliations, Dr. Bukkuri participated in seminars, conferences/workshops and retreats.
Recently, Dr. Bukkuri accepted a new position as a tenured Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at City St George’s, University of London. In this role, he will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and establish a research group that develops and applies mathematical and philosophical tools to explore foundational questions at the intersection of cancer, evolutionary ecology, and social science.
A key part of this trajectory was the mentorship that shaped it. Dr. Bukkuri describes feeling “very fortunate to have had a wonderful advisor who allowed me to develop my own ‘internal tuning fork’ early in graduate school. That freedom made it possible to formulate and explore questions that I was interested in, organize symposia at numerous international conferences, and effectively network with a wide variety of colleagues.”
Dr. Bukkuri also credits his time spent as a visiting researcher at Lund University. “The wet lab work at Lund influenced my decision to pursue an experimentally oriented postdoc at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, while professional science communication training and experience have proven useful in several contexts,” he said.
Curiosity is also a defining theme in the evolution of Dr. Bukkuri’s career. He shared, “I make an effort to read rather broadly and immerse myself in diverse intellectual environments as I find that this helps boost creativity - after all, you never know where that unexpected connection may lie!”
Looking ahead, Dr. Bukkuri anticipates making connections – both in the lab and with his research group.
“I very much look forward to starting my research group and exploring the fascinating connections that lie at the intersection of cancer, evolutionary ecology and social dynamics.”
Dr. Bukkuri's advice to current Moffitt trainees:
- “Be bold, take risks and don’t be afraid of asking the big questions.”
- "Have fun! Sure, there are setbacks here and there, but science is basically playing for grown-ups! We literally get paid to think and tinker around with the ideas that we find most interesting, travel to exotic locations around the world to tell our nerdy friends what we’ve found, and pass on the fruits of our labor—and those that came before us—to the next generation."
