Dr. Alvaro Monteiro giving a lab tour

Dr. Alvaro Monteiro's lab conducts research to explore the role of genetic variation on cancer predisposition, development, and treatment.

Moffitt Corporate Partners in Health is an initiative of the George Edgecomb Society that invites businesses and organizations to invest in Moffitt’s community outreach and cancer prevention initiatives. Members of the partnership came to Moffit’s Magnolia Campus in April to tour laboratories and speak to Moffitt experts who are researching health disparities.

The group conducted two different tours. Alvaro Monteiro, PhD, of Moffitt’s Cancer Epidemiology program, spoke about “Addressing the Risk of Ovarian Cancer in African American Women.” Jenny Vidrine, PhD, spoke about “How Moffitt is Caring for our Community and Refining Research.”

Henry and Robin Wise, supporters of the George Edgecomb Society, said they were impressed with the tours, which showed not only how Moffitt is researching cancer but also working to ensure that quality cancer care is accessible to all patients.

“I thought it was very informative and put things in perspective,” Henry Wise said.

Lana Walsh, of the USF Credit Union, said it she appreciated hearing directly from scientists involved in cancer research. “You can see the passion they have for what they do,’ she said.

Moffitt lab tours are open to members of Moffitt giving societies such as the George Edgecomb Society, Moffitt Corporate Partners in Health, the Moffitt Merit Society and Pinellas Partners.
