TAMPA, Fla. — The Florida Inventors Hall of Fame has announced that W. Gregory Sawyer, Ph.D., Chief BioEngineering Officer and Chair of the Department of BioEngineering at Moffitt Cancer Center, has been selected as a 2025 inductee.  Sawyer is being recognized for his inventions and contributions to biomedical engineering, tribology and cancer research, which have significantly advanced patient care and scientific innovation.

A pioneer in the cancer engineering field, Sawyer holds 43 U.S. patents and has developed transformative technologies across multiple areas. His work includes the creation of polymeric nanocomposites for space, low-friction materials for extreme environments, orthopedic implants, hydrogels and soft materials for medical devices.

At Moffitt, Sawyer leads efforts in cancer engineering, biomaterials, bioimaging and bioengineering. His patents and inventions in imaging, freeform 3D bioprinting and multifunctional microgel materials have enabled a comprehensive suite of technologies for cancer biology and drug discovery that are used by major pharmaceutical companies and leading research universities and cancer centers across the country.

“Dr. Sawyer’s visionary work at the intersection of engineering and oncology has opened entirely new avenues for cancer research and treatment,” said Patrick Hwu, M.D., President and CEO of Moffitt. “His innovations are accelerating the pace of discovery and helping us get closer to cures. We are proud to see his achievements recognized by the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame.”

Sawyer's achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and recipient of the Tribology Gold Medal, the highest international honor in this field. His other honors include the BioFlorida Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and the Burt L. Newkirk and Marshall B. Peterson Awards from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The 2025 Florida Inventors Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Gala will take place on Friday, October 31, 2025, at the Tampa Marriott Water Street in downtown Tampa.
