New Wellness Room Is Easing Anxiety for Cancer Patients
Key Takeaways
- Moffitt Cancer Center opened a Starlight Wellness Room to help cancer patients and caregivers reduce anxiety during treatment
- The immersive sensory space uses starlight projections and calming sounds and builds on research into starlight therapy before chemotherapy
- Patients in an early Moffitt study reported lower anxiety after 15-minute sessions highlighting the value of emotional support during cancer care
Cancer treatment can be physically and emotionally demanding. Now, patients and their caregivers at Moffitt Cancer Center’s McKinley Clinic have access to a new resource designed to bring comfort, calm and a moment of escape during their care journey.
The newly opened Starlight Wellness Room offers patients a tranquil environment where they can relax before or after treatment. Using specialized technology, the room transforms into an immersive sensory experience, projecting gentle images of stars and drifting clouds across the walls and ceiling to create a soothing atmosphere. A flickering campfire light and an outdoor noise machine add to the ambience.
The Science Behind the Calm
The concept stems from Moffitt’s ongoing commitment to supporting the whole patient. In 2023, Moffitt began exploring starlight therapy as an innovative approach to help patients manage anxiety prior to starting cancer treatment. Originally studied in hospice care, the therapy demonstrated remarkable success in reducing symptoms such as pain, restlessness and shortness of breath, prompting researchers and clinicians to explore its potential benefits in oncology settings.
Moffitt has since studied the use of starlight therapy among patients with breast cancer undergoing their first cycle of chemotherapy. During a 15-minute session, patients reclined comfortably beneath a star-filled projection designed to encourage relaxation and reduce stress before treatment begins.

Moffitt leaders celebrate the opening of the starlight wellness room with a ribbon cutting.
The results have been encouraging. Patients who participated reported lower levels of anxiety following their sessions until after their treatment ended, highlighting the value of creating dedicated spaces focused on emotional well-being.
“The feedback we’ve received from patients has been overwhelmingly positive,” said nurse Alexa Lahera. “They appreciate having a space where they can relax, disconnect from the stress of treatment and focus on something calming.”
Caring for the Whole Patient
More than just a quiet room, the Starlight Wellness Room reflects Moffitt’s holistic approach to cancer care. By addressing the emotional and psychological challenges that often accompany treatment, the space helps patients and caregivers find moments of calm and comfort.
“We’re committed to offering patients every possible tool to enhance their overall well-being,” Tina Mason, director of nursing research, said.
As Moffitt continues to explore innovative ways to improve the patient experience, the Starlight Wellness Room serves as a reminder that healing can be supported not only through medicine, but also through moments of peace, comfort and care.
