Volunteers Offer a Steady Presence When it Counts the Most

For some patients and families arriving at Moffitt Cancer Center before sunrise, Rhonda McIntyre is often one of the first people they meet, and one they won’t forget. 

A dedicated volunteer in Moffitt’s McKinley Hospital surgical waiting room, McIntyre spends her early mornings helping patients and caregivers navigate the start of their day. 

Whether she’s checking in patients, guiding families to waiting areas or simply offering a reassuring presence, she plays a meaningful role in moments that can feel overwhelming.  

“I started volunteering at the cancer center in June 2025 after spending an entire day here while a friend underwent a 10-hour surgery,” McIntyre said. “I saw firsthand the care and kindness shown to patients and families, and I knew I wanted to come back and be part of that for someone else.” 

At Moffitt, McIntyre noticed the kindness, the attentiveness and the way team members made space for both comfort and clarity. 

Now, every Wednesday and Friday, often starting as early as 5 a.m., she returns to the same space that once held her own uncertainty. But today, she’s the one offering reassurance. 

In recognition of her compassion and commitment, McIntyre was recently named Volunteer of the Year, an honor that reflects the impact she makes in even the smallest interactions.  

For those who work alongside her and the patients she supports, the recognition comes as no surprise. 

McIntyre is the steady voice answering questions and the friendly face walking someone to the next step. She assists with everything from validating patient wristbands and gathering caregiver information to escorting patients to pre-op rooms and helping coordinate post-surgery conversations with physicians. Each task, no matter how routine, is done with care. 

Not a day goes by without McIntyre hearing gratitude from the people she meets — patients who have traveled from across the state or even across the country in search of care. Some share that they came to Moffitt after exploring other treatment options, drawn by the expertise and specialized care. Others simply express appreciation for the environment and the feeling that they are truly being looked after. 

That sense of connection is what keeps her coming back. 

After retiring, McIntyre says she missed the rhythm of a structured day and the connection of being part of a team. Volunteering has filled that space in a meaningful way, while also allowing her to build lasting relationships with staff and fellow volunteers. 

“It’s a wonderful opportunity,” she said. “You truly get as much out of it, if not more, than what you give.” 

Student Volunteer of the Year  

Quinn Pullara credits his volunteer experience with helping shape his future goals in health care.

In addition to honoring McIntyre, Moffitt also recognized student volunteer Quinn Pullara as Student Volunteer of the Year.  

Since beginning in September 2025, Pullara has supported both the MRI department and patient transport, helping prepare patients for procedures and ensuring they safely reach their destinations throughout the hospital.  

Inspired by an interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy, he saw volunteering as an opportunity to both learn and give back. 

As Moffitt continues its mission of delivering exceptional care, volunteers like McIntyre and Pullara play an important role in supporting patients and families along the way. Through their time, dedication and willingness to serve, they help ensure that each person who walks through the doors feels supported from the very start.
