Key Takeaways for Busy Providers

  • Gastrointestinal surgical oncology consultations are now available at Moffitt's SouthShore location in Ruskin, FL.

  • Appropriate referrals include colorectal liver metastases, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and neuroendocrine tumors.

  • Early evaluation supports timely diagnosis, enabling more personalized treatment planning and access to a full range of treatment options.

Moffitt Cancer Center now offers gastrointestinal surgical oncology consultations at SouthShore, expanding access to specialized evaluation and treatment planning for patients with suspected or confirmed liver and biliary malignancies. This new service allows community physicians to connect patients with Moffitt's hepatobiliary surgical oncology team in South Hillsborough while maintaining access to the resources of an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Specialized Expertise for Complex Liver and Biliary Malignancies

Management of hepatobiliary cancers often requires coordination across multiple specialties. Patients evaluated at SouthShore have access to surgeons who focus exclusively on liver, bile duct, pancreatic and neuroendocrine malignancies and work closely with medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology and other specialists to develop individualized treatment recommendations.

The clinic provides comprehensive care throughout the surgical journey, including pre-surgical evaluation, treatment planning and post-surgical follow-up, helping ensure patients receive timely, coordinated care tailored to their disease, goals and overall health.

Which Patients Should Be Considered for a GI Consult?

Early subspecialty evaluation can help guide diagnosis, treatment planning and surgical decision-making for patients with primary and metastatic liver tumors. Consultation may be appropriate for patients with:

  • Colorectal liver metastases
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma
  • Distal extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma
  • Neuroendocrine liver metastases
  • Neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas and small bowel

Patients with suspicious imaging findings, newly diagnosed disease or complex cases requiring multidisciplinary review may also benefit from evaluation.

Why Refer to Moffitt?

In addition to specialized surgical expertise, patients may benefit from access to advanced treatment options and technologies that are not widely available in community settings. These include liver-directed therapies such as the FDA-cleared HistoSonics Edison® Histotripsy System for appropriate candidates, as well as consideration for clinical trials and emerging treatment approaches.

Referring providers also benefit from coordinated care and ongoing communication throughout the patient's treatment journey.

"Many patients with liver and biliary malignancies benefit from early evaluation by a hepatobiliary specialist, even when surgery is not immediately planned. Early consultation helps identify the full range of treatment options and ensures patients receive the most appropriate care at the right time.
