Overview
Cancer Focus:
SarcomaCole Friedes, MD, is a radiation oncologist at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, who specializes in radiation therapy for sarcoma. Dr. Friedes treats adults with soft tissue sarcoma of the arms, legs, trunk, and retroperitoneum, as well as bone sarcomas, desmoid tumors, and rare subtypes such as angiosarcoma and myxoid liposarcoma.
As a member of the Moffitt Sarcoma Program, Dr. Friedes works with sarcoma surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to build one coordinated plan for each patient. He specializes in robustly optimized intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Dr. Friedes works alongside Arash Naghavi, MD, MS, to deliver hypofractionated accelerated radiation dose painting (HARD). HARD is a Moffitt-developed approach that gives higher doses to the highest-risk areas of a tumor in fewer treatments while protecting nearby healthy tissue, and it is especially valuable for sarcomas that cannot be removed with surgery. He also offers eligible patients enrollment in the Habitat Escalated Adaptive Therapy (HEAT) phase 2 clinical trial, which uses advanced MRI and tumor genomics to tailor radiation dose within each tumor.
Dr. Friedes earned his medical degree from the University of Central Florida College of Medicine, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where he served as chief resident. He explains each treatment option in plain language and aligns care with each patient’s goals. He cares for each patient with empathy, clear communication, and a treatment plan built around their goals.
